Media Tips From Your PR Doctor For Effective Electronic Media Interviews

Expert Author Glenn Ebersole
Have you ever been interviewed by the electronic media. Have you ever declined an interview because you felt totally fearful and uneasy on TV or radio? Have you been interviewed and then wished you would have had the benefit of some tips to prepare for and deliver a more effective interview? Well, I want to offer you another set of tips or as I like to call it - another prescription from your PR Doctor - to use for your next interview opportunity.
A Prescription For Effective TV Interviews:
1. Prepare for the interview by developing some quotable quotes that are succinct, memorable and to the point.
2. Prepare key messages to use and bridge back to your key messages when answering questions during the interview.
3. Think in sound bites. You can enhance the effectiveness of your interview if you use examples, anecdotes and graphics.
4. Avoid the phrase "I think" since this weakens the impact of your message and the sound bite.
5. Remain calm and smile! Smiles are an effective way to accentuate your message.
6 Look at the interviewer so it does not appear that your eyes are wandering.
7. Lean slightly forward towards the camera. This will promote a feeling of intimacy and it will make you look thinner.
8. Wear a dark jacket. Avoid white shirts without jackets. A dark jacket helps convey confidence and credibility.
9. Drink water to make sure you are fully hydrated. Do not drink milk, caffeine or alcohol since they will negatively impact your performance.
10. Rehearse! Always practice your key messages and quotable quotes and how to work them into the interview.
A Prescription for Effective Radio Interviews:
1. Prepare your talking points and write them down as a way to prompt yourself.
2. Remember, you are being interviewed due to your knowledge of a subject. You are the "expert" and you need to be confident, prepared and straightforward.
3. Use a reliable and clear phone connection for a telephone interview. Always turn off the call waiting feature. Do not use a cell phone or headset.
4. If you do not understand a question, ask for clarification. Do not assume you know what they are asking.
5. Compliment the interviewer when a very good question is asked.
6. Refer to the interviewer by name in the interview conversation. This will create a more intimate conversation, make the interviewer feel good and make the audience feel they have access to a private conversation.
7. Sell yourself to the listening audience.
8. Be prepared for any interview opportunity and do not judge an interview by its length. Any interview has the potential for positive rewards for you.
9. Be sensitive to time during the interview. Keep an eye on the clock so you can help ensure you get time for a closing comment.
10. Seek media training for interviews. This can be a major plus and give you a powerful advantage if you learn the strategies and techniques for great interviews.

Three Strategies to Help Your Kids Survive Today's Electronic Media Epidemic

Expert Author Raphael Neff
According to a 2010 study by the Kaiser Family Foundation, children ages 8-18 spend on average 7 hours and 11 minutes daily using electronic media devices for entertainment purposes-which over the course of a year amounts to more than four times the number of hours spent in school!
And that's not even counting cell phone calls and texting.
Since kids multi-task much of the time, total media consumption is 10 hours and 7 minutes daily!
Excessive use of electronics is permanently damaging our children's lives at a time when their social, emotional, and cognitive development is most critical. If you're like many parents today, you're familiar with the resulting fallout: grades suffering in school, family members ignored, and kids increasingly unable to make important decisions.
With this alarming trend starting so early in our children's lives, how can you as a parent lead your child to enjoy a fruitful, productive childhood?
I see an alarming number of young drivers AND adults with the eyes on their smart phones, not on the lurking dangers of the road. And I have found myself guilty of the same.
My own kids are watching me. Am I texting while driving? When I come home from work, do I leave my phone in my pocket or am I rechecking my email while they beg for my attention?
This technology opens our communication with people on the other side of the world, at the expense of those next door, or... at our own dinner table.
#1 Start early with healthy habits
A recent study reported that "neural pathway formation in children who overuse technology is 'short-circuiting' the frontal cortex, permanently altering the way children think and behave, creating unimaginable problems for the education and penal systems."
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has advocated the following for years:
  • Children should watch no more than one to two hours of quality TV or videos daily.
  • Children under age two should not watch TV.
  • Parents should not allow TV use in children's rooms.
  • Children should not watch TV while doing homework.
Consider regulating use of other electronic media as well. Remember, it's okay to lay down rules. You are the parent doing this for their well-being!
The earlier you provide boundaries for your children, the more easily they accept them as normal, and the more you can provide opportunities for a positive outcome.
#2. Don't just regulate media-replace with positive alternatives.
With about 9% of our nation's kids "addicted" to playing video games, resulting in underdeveloped social skills, it's time we heed the experts reminding us that creative, social childhood play is crucial for their development.
Sports and playing board games with family or friends are both fun, easy ways to strengthen your child socially, emotionally, and cognitively.
#3. Take an interest in your child's activities.
When 4-6 year olds were asked whether they would rather watch TV or spend time with their dad, 54% said they would rather watch TV! Is it possible that many kids today are more interested in engaging with media in part because parents are not showing the interest they could in their kids' lives?
Children whose parents are actively involved in their schooling, however, are
  • less likely to experience social or behavior problems;
  • more likely to become accomplished and achieve better grades.
In addition to helping at your child's school, as a parent you can
  • create a home environment conduce to learning;
  • provide access to books and other learning materials;
  • talk to your children about school;
  • give encouragement and homework help as needed.
It's insights like these that you can use to protect your family.
This generation is overwhelmed with media, an epidemic spawning an array of damaging habits.

How Can We Prevent Abuse Of Electronic Media Devices?

Expert Author Carolyn L. Nelson
How many adults stay up at night on social network sites catching up on your day? How many adults text before bed catching up with their friends and family? Do you find that this affects your sleep? I know from personal experience if I stay up and do these things right before bedtime, I cannot fall asleep. My brain pistons are firing and I cannot quiet my thoughts. I have learned not to do this. I have a friend in another state-3 hour differential, and we talk infrequently, so I talk to her when I can and it is chatting with her on Facebook late at night (my time). Then, I have problems falling asleep. I end up staying up and reading on my Nook. Is this a culprit also? I have not found it a problem-only when I want to finish the book to find out what happens. Then I feel like a little girl with the flashlight on underneath my covers reading when I am supposed to be sleeping.
This is a serious problem. The children and teenagers find us doing this and they either copy us or just do it to be in connection with their friends-an extension of their day at school to talk to their friends when they do not have time to talk to them outside of lunch or after class. It can easily be used as a babysitter for younger kids, but what are we teaching them? And, what kind of trouble are they getting in when we are not supervising sites they are on?
With the new Techno world we are facing we now have to be mindful of these things and not only educate ourselves, but educate our children appropriate use of such devices. Children will use social media and say things that they only think they are telling friends. They are not aware they are allowing the entire world to read their work and that the ramifications of what they say-how it will affect them or how it will affect others. Children and adolescents have not developed higher abstract thinking that adults have developed to think ahead and realize the consequences their actions may cause.
We as parents and adults can set good examples for our kids. One example is maybe to have every other day a plugged in day. On the plugged in day, children have an hour to be on the internet, web-based games, video games, telephone texting, and limited TV. On the off day there is no use of electronics belonging to this Techno world. You plan game night, story time, going to the library, etc. Another example is setting specific hours when electronic media can be used and when they cannot be used. This will eliminate the late night hours on electronic media that interfere with sleep. Will the children and adolescents be angry when you set these limits? Yes, they will be. Do not give in. When they see you mean business, they will stop fighting. Yes, you may be the electronic media police, but it will be for a good reason. That means, you will have to set the example. One way is to have all electronic media out of the bedrooms and left only in the family area. That is where it can be used. I had one mom who took her adolescent's cell phone and iPod at 9 pm at night and she did not get it until the next morning.
These are only some things to think about. We have to prepare ourselves for the new Techno world that we now live in and read up on it as much as we can. What is good for our children and adolescents? We need to know where they are and who they are with on electronic media. I had one client on-line on play station playing a game with gamers. He got into a chat room with who he thought was a 12-year-old girl. He gave out identifying information and was texting her on the phone. When his mom looked into it, it happened to be an adult male from another country.
Dangers abound and we need to be aware of what is out there on the electronic media as well as how much we allow our children and adolescents to utilize these outside Techno devices. I cannot implore enough-education, education, education. There are now You-Tube Videos on what can go wrong with Techno media. Watch them, have your kids watch them. Educate them on the dangers of too much electronic media. Do not get caught with your pants down.

In nexus to the above, electronic media monitoring has its significance amplified in this dynamic IT environment. With businesses mushrooming at a spurt speed its relevance at the workplace has increased manifolds. Electronic media monitoring brings together businesses from all sectors in an extraordinary global network, committed to documenting and altering patterns of portrayal in the forefront.
Electronic monitoring is a tool used in corrections rather than a correctional program in itself. It is used for intensive supervision. Owners are struggling to earn the understanding of their employees. And this technique assists them in getting closer to bridging the lacuna in the working of the employees. Maximizing the results derived from the energies of the employees employed is vital to the success stature for any business.
Lost worker productivity is a noteworthy issue faced by business leaders today. Arguably one of the chief issues contributing to this is the personal use of company computers by employees - a trend that has evolved from today's tech savoir-faire generation of human resources who view this as a right versus a privilege. In retort, budding statistics of employers are spinning to sophisticated technology to scrutinize computer doings on the Internet, use of electronic mail, and computer file transfers.
The benefits of an effective computer monitoring system cannot be demonstrated in limited text here. Eventually we discovered that all the above is just the tip of the iceberg relative to the inappropriate web destinations being accessed during work time. When surveyed about the kind of websites browsed by the employees the revelation was beyond imagined. Employee visits to inappropriate websites; on-line dating services, e-shopping portals, and even resume update sites brought a shocking picture to forefront. All this impels the need to monitor activities that play a dominating and a crucial role in the making or breaking of the business.
The recent times, have experienced an explosion of information and its trouble-free availability on Internet has thrown up new challenges for managers engaged with reputation management.
Because of all diverse information that needs attention, monitoring via electronic media has become important and challenging.
However on national level it is carried out in a different tone. Media monitors in each country apply a standardized set of monitoring tools to amass the essential information. National data is provided to countries that desire to create reports based on their own exact findings. The two main facets to monitoring are, the first is the study to collect quantitative data.
This provides a comprehensive picture of the entire scenario. Second is the qualitative monitoring that moves behind the numbers to look at the quality of the coverage. All in all, every business today has a lifeline that pumps around its effective monitoring utilizing media concepts that proves as an added asset to its very functioning. To conclude with, it would not be wrong to say that Electronic Media Monitoring is vital for appending business effectiveness in all its dimensions.
